Devotion 12/17/08

I missed yesterday's devotion, and I was wrong in doing so. I am very disappointed in myself. I had a lot of things going on that in no way excuses me. It was my fault. Forsaking my fellowship with God in the morning is a horrible crime. I should love and cherish this time above all things. I have the great privilege of spending time with the almighty Creator.

Proverbs 17

Pro 17:7  "Excellent speech becometh not a fool: much less do lying lips a prince."
-We can only speak that which becomes us. However, that isn't always the case. For as Christians, our conversation should be holy. (1Pe 1:15  But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation;) Our speech is hardly what it should be. We are heirs to the Kingdom of God. We are the sons of God, blessed are we. Our conversation should be drastically different, reflecting our God.

Pro 17:9  He that covereth a transgression seeketh love; but he that repeateth a matter separateth very friends.
-Covering a transgression, or forgetting what someone did to you, is very hard and darn near impossible, in our eyes. But we can forgive and forget. Why? Because Christ paid for all transgressions. We can honestly forgive and forget because Christ has already eliminated it. Don't think that by you 'forgiving' and 'forgetting' you are any better than that person. The only good thing about you is Christ. Never forget that.

Pro 17:17  A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.
-With that statement, can any of us really say that we are a friend? I don't think so. If you claim you love at all times, you are full of it. Again, only can we love at all times because Christ loves at all times. In us is no ability to truly love, apart from the Holy Spirit in us. In addition, there is nothing to love about someone else, besides the fact that Christ loves them. We are all filthy, dirty, disgusting sinners. Christ is the only thing that is beautiful in us.

Pro 17:27  He that hath knowledge spareth his words: and a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit.
-I like what Matthew Henry said. "A man of understand has a cool head and a warm heart." (paraphrased)

Zechariah 2

Man this stuff is powerful. It is very hard to understand, but it is really awesome. Once you get into a couple commentaries, you will understand. I studied matt. henry's, and then I checked out the strand study bible. All three parts of the triune God-head is mentioned here. Christ is the man measuring Jerusalem. The angel that approached him is the holy spirit. The Holy Spirit passed on information to Christ to give to the 'young man'. All these visions were meant to encourage Zechariah to finish rebuilding the Temple.

In the vision, Zechariah sees a man measuring Jerusalem, who happens to be Christ. This is what caught my attention. The first and most obvious thing you would wonder is why is Christ measuring Jerusalem? (especially when He is God and already knows how large Jerusalem is, lol) He did it to encourage Zechariah and to send a message. He was measuring Jerusalem to know what needed to be added. What is this new addition? The New Jerusalem. Christ was letting us know that He was getting the New Jerusalem ready. This ties into greater prophecy later in the chapter.
-The rest of the chapter foretells of the wrath accompanied with Christ's return.
